It seems every word he spoke had swagger. John Wayne’s words definitely had impact; sometimes followed by a right hook. When the indomitable actor said he’d have your hide, you believed it.

Born Marion Morrison in 1907, Wayne became the ultimate Hollywood icon, starring in such classics as Stagecoach, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Sands of Iwo Jima, Flying Tigers, The Quiet Man, The Comancheros, True Grit, The Shootist and many, many more. He was the lead character in more than 130 movies. He died in June 1979 from stomach cancer.
The photo that serves as backdrop for the John Wayne quote was taken in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., about 1931. It was about that time that John Wayne got his first starring role in the film The Big Trail. He was idolized by children of all ages for decades, along with other famous cowboy actors like Roy Rogers, Henry Fonda, Gene Autry, Audie Murphy, Jimmy Stewart, Don ‘Red’ Barry and others.

He was considered the epitome of a man’s man by most everyone, but he always had an excuse as to why he didn’t join up and serve during WWII.

I had not read that. I know others served. I saw a great photo on Instagram this week of Jimmy Stewart being pinned with a medal in 1944.
