Treasured Wisdom from Sir Winston Churchill

Sir Winston Churchill was a statesman, a military strategist and the prime minister of Great Britain during the perilous years of World War II. He was also a prolific author and one of the most quotable figures of the 20th century. The son of an English father and an American mother, Churchill was given honorary United States citizenship in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy.

Churchill (1874-1965) was a war historian, penning a four-volume recounting of World War I and a six-volume history of World War II. His quote in this installment of Treasured Wisdom is compelling, for it reveals how the author can control the narrative.

Family historians should strive for accuracy as any reputable historian would on other subjects. But to have influence over the history of an important subject, you must write about it first. Stories are most powerful and important to every family’s heritage. Once the story is written, it can be shared and passed down through the generations.

See our Stories section for examples of compelling family tales. Hover your cursor over the word “Stories” on the home page menu to find even more examples.
